DMX, Westside Gunn, Benny The Butcher, and Conway The Machine spit bars on new “Departure” single “Hood Blues.”
DMX’s impending Exodus is dropping Friday, and today denotes the appearance of the hotly anticipated Griselda coordinated effort “Hood Blues.” Featuring extensive stanzas from Westside Gunn, Benny The Butcher, and Conway The Machine, the melodiously determined force cut catches the messy and crude energy recently seen on It’s Dark And Hell Is Hot.
Checking in at four and a half minutes, “Hood Blues” gives abundant space to each emcee to hold it down. Given that this one was recorded preceding X’s disastrous passing, it’s even more compensating to see the science unfurling as the track advances. Following up Westside, Benny, and Machine, X holds it down with the end proclamation. “I grew up with the clouded side, politically-sanctioned racial segregation, where contradicting some common norms would get you abducted and hoard tied,” he snarls, his scary presence underlined by his particular snarls. “X the illest ni*ga, realest ni*ga/never been terrified, I’m a dauntless nig*a.”
